Five Methods of Controlling Blood Pressure

Finding ways of controlling high blood pressure is important for anyone who has been diagnosed with hypertension. Fortunately, your blood pressure can be controlled using a mix of traditional medicine and healthy lifestyle choices. Here are the top five ways to get yours under control.
Exercise: Exercise can make up for a world of bad behavior. One of the best ways of controlling blood pressure is to ensure that you are getting enough exercise. Most specialists recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise 4-5 days a week, but to really see results you should double that. Get up out of the chair, go outside and really work up a sweat.
Go for a vigorous (that means you are sweating and your heart rate is elevated slightly) walk or jog 6 days days a week for at least an hour. Of all of the things you can do on this list, exercise will help you feel better the fastest. Your body was built for motion, so move it. As always check with your doctor before you start on any exercise program, they may have advice to help you get started slowly enough to remain healthy and injury free, yet quickly enough that you can start to see real results fast.
Reduce Sodium Intake: Salt adds flavor, but too much salt can add to your out of control BP numbers as well. If you have severe hypertension, your doctor will most likely put you on a limited or sodium free diet. Even if your BP numbers are under control, you can help keep them that way by limiting your daily salt consumption. Use less salt when cooking, and taste your food before seasoning it rather than just grabbing the salt shaker the minute you sit down at the table.
Limit "Vice" foods: Caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. The big three come into play here as they so often do. Each of them are proven contributors to hypertension and you would do well to eliminate them completely from your diet. If that seems like too tall of an order, at least try to cut way back on their use.
Maintain a Healthy Diet: Your diet was a least partially responsible for getting you into this mess, and your diet can help you overcome it. Lose the vice foods, and incorporate more healthy fruits and vegetables into your day. Cut out as much cholesterol as possible while you are at it - yes, that means cut back on the fried foods. If you have trouble getting your daily servings of vegetables make the switch gradually starting by drinking 100% fruit and vegetable juices like those made by Naked Juice or Odwalla. Look for products that contain 100% juice with no additives. Its not as good as eating the actual fruits and vegetables themselves, but it is much better than getting no veggies in your diet at all.
Medicine: Many people today try to live their lives as holisticly as possible, and following the first four steps above can go a long way to helping you get your blood pressure under control for the long term. Hypertension can be a killer though, and it is important that you get your under control as quickly as possible. Doctors prescribe a variety of medicines to help manage hypertension.
Listen to yours and take your medicine to get your BP under control while you make the lifestyle changes necessary to maintain healthy numbers throughout the rest of your life. As you make improvements your doctor can reduce the amount of medicine you need until you reach a point where you can hold healthy numbers through exercise and diet alone.
