Birthday Gifts for Gardeners
by Thomas Baugh
While shopping for birthday gifts for most friends and family members can sometimes be pretty tricky, the truth of the matter is that you are in luck when it comes to gardeners. No matter what kind of garden they are maintaining, gardeners need all kinds of stuff, and there is an entire industry that has been built around creating every possible tool and accessory that a gardener could ever possibly need.
Whether you are looking for birthday gifts for a gardener who specializes in exotic and native plants or a survivalist who prefers to raise his or her own crops on a private homestead, gardening tools and accessories are a no-brainer. Let's take a look at some of the top birthday gifts for gardeners.
These days, some of the most popular birthday gifts for gardeners are designed to make organic gardening easier. Although health experts have assured us that commercially produced fruits and vegetables are as healthy as organically grown crops, there is no denying that raising plants that are 100% organic is better for the environment and simply more satisfying. Some of the best birthday gifts for organic gardeners include compost pile additives, books on organic gardening and organic seeds that are not available in stores.
If you are shopping for birthday gifts for a gardener who has a special interest in native or exotic plants, one of the best possible gifts that you have at your disposal is a subscription to a plant of the month club. There are a wide variety of plant of the month clubs available these days that are designed to appeal to every style of gardening, and a subscription to one of these clubs will give your friend or family member something to look forward to throughout the year. A subscription to the perfect plant of the mug can be presented with a nice little gardening accessory like a citronella candle or a garden sign.

May 16, 2010 ~ Hello :) This video is an update on my vegie garden. The scenario is stores are closed for an uncertain amount of time and I need to start a vegetable garden with what I have at home and on the land. Lessons learned are: soil is a plus with container gardens ie the fluffy kind, have a compost bin for vegetable fertilizer, large plant containers with drainage holes, planter boxes, seeds, garden tools, worms, plant support, critter prevention, and a well thought out plan for a container garden and outdoor garden. Also, family and friends will share unwanted items that can be useful in a garden. This year I have not spent any money for this garden. I bought seeds in 2007-08 which were Dollar General seeds and they will produce seeds. Donations and birthday gifts from friends and family: Shovel, Hand tiller, 4 used Large plastic plant containers with used fluffy white soil inside, organic fertilizer, organic seeds, 1 seed starter, fishing worms, 2 partially worn out wicker baskets, and a rusted metal double shelf. The rest of the items used for the garden were what I had available to me. I am harvesting a small amount of food from the container beans, ie Pole beans and they are of normal size. I have eaten about 14 pole beans and they are delicious! The beans produced 5-6 healthy seeds per pole bean and the seed plan is to plant them next year or I may try planting a few of the seeds to see how they do. For insect control Im spraying the plants 1-2x/wk. with a spray bottle solution of a drop of dawn dish liquid and about 6 ounces of water. This helps some. Ive heard youtube gardeners say plant extra for the insects/critters to munch on. In addition, I read online where critters do not like to walk across anything prickly so I plan to cut some Thorny thistle branches to put around the plants. Im using the old wicker baskets to support and protect some of the vegetable plants. Also, dead saga palm leaves. I will keep you updated :) Gardening is interesting and a pleasantly challenging. I think Im hooked on gardening :) Thank you for watching my video. Comments and suggestions are appreciated. Video+Images by: ln4359 Video created by: ln4359
